OpenBSD [nl] Translation Information

Index

Introduction

This page is dedicated to the [nl] (dutch) translation effort of the OpenBSD project website. Its purpose is to give specific information about the ongoing [nl] translation effort and to allow for better collaboration among maintainers and (regular or occasional) contributors.

For general information about the translation effort (not specific to any particular language), please see the OpenBSD Translation page.

Who is doing this?

As with all OpenBSD activity, this work is done by volunteers.

Steven Mestdagh Maintainer
Jasper Lievisse Adriaanse Contributor

The [nl] translation effort is currently coordinated by Steven Mestdagh.

We would also like to thank these former contributors for their efforts: Rogier Quaak, Daniël De Kok and Wim Vandeputte.

Translation status

The OpenBSD website is made up of 10 sections. Please read translation-explained.html for details.

Our goal is to translate as many HTML pages of interest as possible in all sections described above and more importantly, to maintain the translated pages in sync with their English counterparts. As of today:

If you need a tool to tell you what files need syncing, check out The OpenBSD Translation Status page. This page is generated automatically every hour. The tool used to create this page is makereport which is located in the trtools module of the Steelix CVS tree. You can use it locally instead of relying on the status.html. If you don't have a CVS account or have troubles checking this out, contact Saad Kadhi for help.

[nl] translation guidelines

General translation guidelines
Please do read these general translation guidelines before starting your translation work!

Spelling
When in doubt, consult the official dutch word list or an even more extensive one, and our mini computer lingo dictionary below.

Accentuated letters
A translator must make sure that the accents on the letters are put in the right places and in the right styles (é not è in a word such as "één"). Thanks to the ISO-8859-1 character set, we do NOT use HTML codes.

Line wrapping
Verify that your HTML editor wrap lines correctly at 76 columns. If your editor can't do that, there are other ways to do this such as using the Text::Autoformat Perl module. We won't be accepting uncorrectly wrapped files anymore since it requires non-wanted extra work from the committers.

The use of commas
In Dutch, commas are not required as often as in English. For example, "Joe, Jack, and Jim" becomes "Joe, Jack en Jim".

Polite form of personal pronouns
In the Dutch translations, we try to use the rules of etiquette. So we use "u/uw" instead of "je/jij/jouw" everywhere.

Acronyms
Generally acronyms must not be translated. Examples are: CPU, RAM, FQDN, NIC, TCP, UDP, WLAN, USB, ...

English words
English words which cannot be easily translated or which should be kept as-is for clarity can be double-quoted if appropriate. Below is a list of English words which should not be translated.

adapter gateway prompt
bootable hibernate proprietary
branch high-end proxy
buffer interface queueing
cache kernel repository
